ABOUT ALBERT

Born: Fairbury, Nebraska

B.F.A., Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri, 1977

M.F.A., University of Dallas, Irving, Texas, 1981

I spent the 70’s getting educated majoring in printmaking accumulating the usual reams of juried print and drawing shows acceptance. Two years with the Nebraska Arts Council as an Artist-in-Residence bridged my time between degrees. Arriving in Dallas in 1979 I soon became involved in the local art scene represented by the DW Gallery, a seminal women’s cooperative exhibition effort.

Graduating in 1981 I immediately began teaching in the community college district and at Arts magnet as well as showing statewide. While fulfilling my lifelong interest in construction during the 80’s boom I gravitated to the finer trades, the sharper pencils, and soon had a cabinet shop of my own which then morphed into a furniture shop/art factory. This was located on the edge of the then sleepy Deep Ellum district near downtown Dallas. We worked on my designs and commissions, fabricated other artists’ ideas, and helped galleries with installations, crating shipping. Conduit Gallery marketed my paintings, drawings and art furniture. I was honored to have a piece selected to be in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

A major commission from the Hampstead Group in Dallas in the early 90’s allowed me to finally travel all over my adopted state drawing and exploring Texas. I showed successfully at the Beverly Gordon Gallery eventually opting to represent myself with lavish quarterly open studio party/sales. Continuing my commission work in steel, as well, my workshop produced several dozen pieces for the Sambuca restaurant group nationwide and other concerns as we moved into my present space in New Lebanon, Texas.

Fused and cast glass caught my interest towards the millennium’s end. I built my own kiln, figured it out and started incorporating the beautiful colored glass in my work. Soon the glass became the work itself such as a suspended ceiling back lit with white neon for a private client in Dallas. Casting glass pulls me back to my first love: printmaking. Do this to get that, delayed gratification.
